Correctional officers also have to maintain facility cleanliness, and monitor the in-house work assignments of the offenders. A correctional officer has to possess great people skills, and a genuine desire to help others. Essential duties and responsibilities for Correctional Officer include the following (other duties may be assigned): Assist clients with short-term coping and problem solving. Inventory and secure personal possessions of absconded residents. Observe client behavior and report abnormal behavior in a manner consistent with the situation. Control contraband in facility through general observation and room searches.  Maintain operational control of the facility in the absence of senior staff.  Maintain chronological written records of events that occur during the shift.  Insure facility cleanliness and monitor client work and extra duty assignments.  Monitor client medications.  Obtain urine and breathe samples to monitor client substance use.  Transport IDOC clients.  Monitor visitor activities.  Make periodic tours of the facility and its grounds and monitor number of clients in facility and their behavior.  Conduct lights out and reveilles at designated times and wake clients as requested.
