This position is located in the Clerk?s Office, U.S. District Court, San Francisco, and reports to the Supervisor of Courtroom Operations. The incumbent assists the supervisor with the supervision of the courtroom deputy department, which includes district courtroom deputies, magistrate judge courtroom deputies, and relief courtroom deputies. The incumbent is responsible for courtroom deputy functional areas, including case management, courtroom duties, monitoring calendars, and overseeing the Central Violations Bureau.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Assists with the establishment of performance expectations and provides support in meeting performance expectations. Helps clarify roles and responsibilities of the department.
Assists with assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of subordinate employees. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, including priorities and time schedules. Considers the difficulty of the work and the employees? capability.
Assists with coordinating activities involving courtrooms and related matters, reviews work performed by courtroom deputies, ensures implementation of standardized procedures such as: Speedy Trial, preparing court minutes and judgments, issuing bench warrants, safekeeping of legal documents and exhibits during trials and motion hearings, and other courtroom related procedures. Monitors case management reports and brings problem cases to the attention of the supervisor.
Recommends personnel actions such as: selections, promotions, step increases, reassignments, disciplinary actions, and separations.
Helps prepare and maintain written documentation for employee evaluations. Assists with the preparation of six month reviews and yearly performance evaluations for courtroom deputies and calendar clerks.
Assists with planning, overseeing, and carrying out the training development of employees. Evaluates and recommends training needs and provides the necessary resources for informal training and informational meetings.
Maintains and updates the QA plan for the Courtroom Deputy Department, and conducts QA meetings with the supervisor and specialists. Performs QA on docket entries. Reviews monthly and CJRA statistical reports, and case management reports. Develops quality assurance standards for courtroom deputies and evaluates continuing problems in the quantity and quality of work. Recommends necessary corrective action and training needs of subordinate positions.
Reviews operating practices and procedures to assure efficiency and effectiveness of operations; installs or revises systems, programs, and procedures.
Ensures technical knowledge is current and answers technical questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems which may arise.
Develops and/or evaluates recommendations from subordinates to increase productivity or quality. Ensures effective implementation of new practices and procedures.
Prepares and analyzes statistical summaries, reports, and data.
In supervisor?s absence, reviews and approves annual and sick leave for the deputies assigned to the department. Assists supervisor with reviewing time and attendance sheets to insure correctness and consistency with scheduled leave taken and insure conformance with leave policies.
Schedules coverage of the district courts when the assigned courtroom deputy is absent.
Provides court coverage when other relief deputies are absent or otherwise unavailable.
Other duties as assigned.
