Description:
DEPUTY SHERIFF
The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for a certified list for the position of Deputy Sheriff.
Applications will be accepted until December 26, 2008 at noon.
Contact Sheriff Todd Johnson
318 Leroy Street
Audubon, Iowa 50025
or call Register to View for an application.
The Sheriff Deputy testing will be January 2, 2009. EOE
The Sheriff’s Department and jail are located in the Audubon County Courthouse which was constructed in 1939. The first Sheriff, Benjamin M. Hiatt, was appointed in 1855.
Todd W. Johnson, the current Sheriff, was elected in 2000. Sheriff Johnson served as Chief Deputy to Sheriff Bill Shaw prior to his election. Click here to see all past Audubon Sheriffs.
Jail duties are handled by the Sheriff, deputies and dispatchers. Chief Deputy David Beane serves as jail administrator for the 12 bed facility that houses both male and female inmates and out of county inmates as needed. The jail has had no real structural changes since it was built but is well maintained. The jail’s construction consists of separate cell blocks, one holding room and an isolation cell. Multiple cameras allow dispatchers the ability to monitor inmate activities at all times.
The Sheriff’s Department has been a member of the A.C.S., which stands for Audubon-Cass-Shelby Drug Task Force for over 12 years. Even though it is no longer state or federally funded, the agencies still share equipment and manpower to work larger cases. The Department has been a part of the development of a “Fusion Center" that covers a fourteen county area. Sheriff Johnson is currently the president of the Fusion Center. The purpose of the Fusion Center is to keep communication open between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and to share information.
Barry, the K-9, was added through donations and community support in April of 2003 and is cared for by Deputy Larsen. Several individuals and organizations that helped with the fund raising project included Audubon and Exira Lions Clubs, The American Legion, high school and elementary students and community members. Sheriff Johnson had projected six months to raise the funds for the dog, however, the response was overwhelming and our goal was reached in less than three months. In addition to the donated funds, our local veterinarians have provided all of Barry’s health care and a local feed store provides dog food. Deputy Larsen spent four weeks with Barry at a training school. Barry was purchased from Detector Dogs International, Inc. in Vail, Iowa, which is also where the school was held. Barry and Deputy Larsen are certified in drug detection, evidence recovery, and tracking.
Barry showed his worth as soon as he hit the streets. The first traffic stop, Barry found a stash of drugs. Barry was called to assist the State Patrol on I-80 and alerted to the vehicle. In the vehicle were a large amount of marijuana and a large bag of psilocybin (mushrooms). On another traffic stop, Deputy Larsen and Barry were called to assist the State Patrol. Barry indicated on the vehicle and approximately 20 pounds of psilocybin in a duffel bag were found. This was Barry’s first large find. Barry has been successful on many finds in his career. Barry located several hundred pounds of marijuana on a traffic stop with Cass County. Barry located a mobile meth lab in a vehicle in Audubon County and this led to a large working lab in Exira, located in Audubon County. Barry has helped the Audubon County Sheriff’s Department put together several arrests for drugs and has been a big asset to our community.
The Sheriff’s Office is maintained 24 hours and is the county-wide communications center. Responsibilities include dispatching for Audubon and Exira City Police Departments in a addition to the Sheriff’s Department, rescue, fire, emergency management and disaster services for the entire county, including the towns of Audubon, Exira, Brayton, Kimballton and Gray. Audubon County has enhanced 911 and all the dispatchers are trained as emergency medical dispatchers utilizing the medical priority dispatch system to assist callers with their emergencies as well as gather information for the ambulance personnel. With the help of grants, the communications center has recently been updated with a touchscreen radio and paging system. Dispatchers also monitor the jail, booking room, outside exercise area and exterior of the courthouse from a large screen in the dispatcher area.
The Sheriff’s Department has a great working relationship with all the law enforcement agencies in the county along with the state patrol in our county and the County Attorney Francine Andersen. Francine has been County Attorney for 20 years and is appreciated for her hard work and dedication. With the help of our aggressive County Attorney we have established quite a reputation with the criminal element we deal with.
Audubon County residents take pride in their community. We have worked hard to keep the communication open with the public and this has paid off many times in criminal investigations and crime prevention. Residents are willing to call in reports of things that are out of the ordinary and are willing to come forward in giving us information. Our philosophy is that we can’t do it alone, but if we work together we can make a difference.
