Police Lieutenant Chatham University welcomes applications for the position of Police Lieutenant in our Public Safety Department. Reporting directly to the Chief of Police, the Police Lieutenant oversees day-to-day police, transportation, and investigative operations; provides authoritative guidance on policy development, resource allocation, and crime-reduction initiatives; and participates in the department's scheduled on-call rotation. This position integrates strategic planning, community engagement, and hands-on supervision to foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive campus environment. Duties & Responsibilities: Operations & Incident Command Direct and coordinate all patrol, transportation, and investigative activities campus wide. Ensure appropriate deployment of personnel, proactive patrols, and special events. coverage; prepare operational and after-action reports. Assume command at major incidents, develop tactical plans, and safeguard officer and community safety. Supervision & Leadership Lead Sergeants, Officers-in-Charge, Patrol Officers, and civilian staff; conduct roll calls, assign duties, and review reports. Approve time-off requests, manage shift assignments, and maintain adequate staffing levels. Mentor staff, deliver quarterly supervisor training, and oversee the Field-Training-Officer program. Software & Technology Oversight Administer law-enforcement and dispatch software (e.g., RMS, CAD, body-worn camera, and key campus safety apps); liaise with IT and vendors; train users. Policy, Compliance & Administration Audit reports, equipment, and facilities for compliance with policies, Clery, and applicable federal/state laws. Assist with budget preparation, grant proposals, and special projects; manage records and confidential information. Conduct internal and background investigations, manage progressive discipline, and assist with resolution of grievances. Community Engagement Act as liaison to students, staff, faculty, neighborhood groups, and surrounding agencies. Plan and lead outreach and educational programs that advance community-oriented policing and crime prevention. Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement Analyze crime trends and performance metrics; recommend process improvements and resource allocations. Collaborate with University partners to align safety initiatives with institutional priorities Qualifications: Required Certification: Pennsylvania Act 120 Municipal Police Officer certification and Act 235 (lethal weapons). Experience: At least 10 years of sworn law-enforcement service with 2 years in a supervisory role. Education: Associate degree or 60 college credits; bachelor's degree preferred (public safety, criminal justice, or related field). Valid state driver's license Ability to pass comprehensive background investigation and drug screen. Proficiency with law-enforcement software, Microsoft Office Suite, and modern policing technology. Preferred Advanced leadership training Demonstrated success in community-policing, crisis management, or specialized tactical operations. Experience in a unionized, higher-education environment. Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local laws, Clery Act, and best practices in campus policing. Strong analytical, organizational, and project-management skills. Exceptional interpersonal and written/oral communication abilities; commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful engagement with a diverse community. Ability to make sound, timely decisions under pressure and maintain confidentiality. Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the full range of law-enforcement duties (foot/vehicle patrol, defensive tactics, emergency response, suspect apprehension) in varied environments and weather conditions. Salary Range: $80,000 - 85,000 annually FLSA Full-time Exempt Exact compensation based on candidate skills and experience.
