The Evidence & Property Custodian performs a wide variety of specialized administrative and technical support duties involved in receiving, storing, maintaining, disposing of, and releasing evidence and property collected by law enforcement personnel. This position is responsible for controlling evidence, found and safekeeping property, and ensuring preservation of all items taken into evidence. The incumbent is expected to assure that all evidence and property is collected according to best practices, legal requirements, and department policy, and accordingly is assigned to train personnel on property and evidence protocols as well as collection and storage of evidence. The successful candidate must possess a high degree of ethics, integrity, and commitment to accuracy and compliance, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.

A Day in the Life:

  • Properly receives, processes, and logs incoming evidence and property from law enforcement personnel including sensitive and/or high-risk items; Ensures each item is packaged according to department procedure, stored pursuant to protocols of evidence handling, and maintained in a strict chain-of-custody.
  • Prepares and transports evidence items to and from appropriate testing laboratories.
  • Maintains clean and well-organized evidence rooms to ensure proper preservation and integrity of all evidence and property; Conducts periodic audits and inventories in secured storage areas; Prepares for inspections.
  • Prepares for and presents official courtroom testimony on evidence-related matters; Completes appropriate research of items to fulfill subpoenas and/or court orders.
  • Ensures proper chain-of-custody documentation from evidence/property intake to disposal; Obtains court dispositions and evidence destruction orders for conversion, disbursement, and destruction of evidentiary or found property; Organizes the sale or disposal of converted property in accordance with official documents.
  • Works within departmental Record Management System (RMS) and all databases associated with property to maintain records of all items; Maintains proficiency with operating PCs and retains working knowledge of various Microsoft programs.
  • Provides good customer service to both internal and external customers; Collects pre/post-employment fingerprints from members of the public; Maintains positive and effective working relationships with coworkers.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of evidence-related supplies; Researches pricing, requests quotes, and places orders as necessary for efficient daily operation.
  • Provides training and updates to staff to ensure best practices are being utilized.
  • Performs other minor administrative tasks as assigned.

What You Will Need to be Successful:

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. A directly related technical degree or equivalent post-secondary college course work is preferred.

Experience: One or more years' experience in a similar or related field (inventory and records management) experience is required. Prior experience in a law enforcement capacity strongly preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within 6 months of employment.

Certifications/License: This position must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License with acceptable driving history.

Due to the sensitive nature of access and possession of evidence, property, and equipment, an extensive background check will be conducted.
