ORDINANCE DEPUTY

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES :
Perform various activities involved in the enforcement of ordinances relating to the regulation and control of livestock, weeds, garbage, solid waste, dogs, etc. Coordinate with Planning and Zoning, Environmental Health, Weed/Vector control, and the County Road Department. Provides support for the Sheriff's Office with a focus on improved delivery of law enforcement services to the public.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Supervision is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel on department policies and practices.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED :
Works under the general supervision of the Patrol Sergeant.(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
  • Patrol unincorporated areas of the county and respond to complaints concerning applicable County ordinance violations, zoning violations, on-site waste water, weeds on vacant lots and garbage accumulation on private and public property. Determine property owner identification and notify of violation. Issue citations as appropriate.
  • Receive abandoned car complaints. Determine and notify vehicle owner. Arrange for towing and impoundment as appropriate.
  • Perform fieldwork responding to complaints and capturing animals requiring the use of related equipment and operation of county vehicles. Interview complainants, locate and notify owners and/or impound animals when owner is not located. Issue citations as appropriate.
  • Maintain written records and prepare reports necessary for investigations, crime prevention and office activities.
  • Prepare correspondence related to ordinance violations and maintain related files.
  • Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers
  • Enforces all felony and misdemeanor laws
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other public safety agencies, special interest groups and the general public.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Accounts for and transports evidence coming into custody.
  • Performs special projects as directed by the Sheriff.
  • Attends shift meeting, seminars, and training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote job performance.
  • Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms, and evasive action/driving skills Takes active charge in serious or unusual situations.
  • Watches for wanted or missing person and lost children; administers first aid to the injured in emergency cases.
  • Works under stressful, high risk conditions.
  • Perform in public relations programs, which may include speaking to citizen and school groups and public service efforts. Respond to citizen inquiries and requests. Meet with citizens.
  • Direct road traffic at accident or crime scenes as necessary. Perform CPR and first aid as needed. Serve subpoenas.
  • Maintain strict confidential records and information.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
  • Courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, department heads, outside agency personnel and the public.
  • Regular physical attendance at the employers facility is required.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS :
Provide assistance to public when citizens lock their keys in their vehicles. Ensure proper storage of property turned in to police department. Maintain proficiency by attending conferences and meetings, reviewing reports, reading materials, and meeting with others involved in work areas. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a standard keyboard, use a computer, printer, copier, fax, telephone, radios, handgun, handcuffs, shackles and other restraint devices, chemical agents, collapsible baton, firearm, and bullet resistant vest. The employee may be required to climb, crouch, crawl, bend or stoop, push, pull or drag objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds and must be able to control an unruly individual or animal. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, color and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Additional requirements include the ability to speak, read, and write.
The nature of the work involves exposure to unpredictable situations, which may hazard life or limb. Exposed to prisoners. Potential exists to be exposed to blood borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Approximately 50 to 60 percent of the work time may be spent outdoors in all seasons. Must be able to deal with crime scene situations up to and including homicides. Constant exposure to high stress levels.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Work locations are in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. Full scope of work activities requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions and may expose incumbent to animal bites, garbage, bio-hazardous waste, and diseases.
Contact with individuals who may become verbally or possibly physically offensive, irrational, or who may have communicable diseases.
