Police Officers are responsible for maintaining law and order and protecting life and property by responding to emergency situations, and proactively patrolling the City of Trussville to both deter and enforce criminal and traffic laws. Police Officers will be exposed to dangerous situations and should be able to use good judgement to act without direct supervision when encountering emergency situations all while staying within departmental, state, and federal policy and laws. Police Officers are required to have a substantial knowledge of law enforcement methods and state and local codes to perform their duties. Common tasks of a Police Officer include but are not limited to:

  1. Patrolling an assigned area or beat on foot or in an assigned vehicle.
  2. Interacting with the public to assure communication between the department and citizens.
  3. Completing reports to document crimes, incidents, or traffic accidents in an accurate and timely manner.
  4. Enforcement of criminal and traffic laws.
  5. Directing traffic.
  6. Giving directions, answering questions, and assisting stranded motorists.
  7. Testifies in local, state, and federal court.
  8. Responds to calls for service as directed by dispatch or supervisors.
  9. Notifies supervisors and/or the appropriate agencies of hazardous conditions and situations.
  10. Helps control crowds at crime scenes or large special events.
  11. Maintains a highly visible presence in the community for the purpose of deterring crime and maintaining good community relations.
  12. Performs residential and business security checks.
  13. Provides emergency medical assistance to citizens when assistance is needed.
  14. Maintains issued equipment and reports and problems with issued items to supervisors.
  15. Attends training events and reviews professional publications and materials to stay current and develop skills in assigned work areas.
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position.
Must meet all of the following and Option A, B or C below.

Must have no felony convictions.
Must have no convictions in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding 1 year.
Must NOT be subject to a court order that restrains the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child of such intimate partner.
Must NOT be prohibited by state or federal law from owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
Must NOT be required to register as a convicted sex offender.
Must have an honorable discharge if served in the US Armed Forces.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be at least 19 years of age.
Must have a Driver's License.
Must be in good health and physically fit for the performance of duties of a law enforcement officer.

Option A:
Must have been previously APOSTC certified and who are required to complete the Refresher training for reinstatement of their Certification.

Option B:
Must possess an earned Associate's degree from a College or University accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or is regional equivalent.

Option C:
Must possess a high school diploma or GED and take and pass the ACT WorkKeys Assessment for Law Enforcement Officers.
