This position is an entry level, non-sworn position in the Police Department . Incumbents in the position are assigned to the Basic Recruit Police Officer Course at an approved Community College and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the Florida Police Officer Standards and Training Certificate before becoming candidates for the sworn position of Police Officer. Reports to the Patrol Sergeant.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Attends and participates in a departmental approved Basic Police Officer Recruit School maintaining a grade point average of 80% throughout the course; must score
at least a 72% on the Florida Basic Abilities Test for Law Enforcement.
2. Must maintain 100% attendance in Basic Recruit School pursuant to CJSTC rules; must maintain a professional, alert, and business-like manner; must maintain a military bearing in the classroom, during field training and when in the community at all times.
3. Required to report to work at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and to work the entire assigned shift; required to work on weekend and designated holidays; unusual shifts and hours may also be required, may be required to direct traffic or perform other police-related functions when not attending classes.
4. Required to successfully graduate from the assigned Basic Police Officer Recruit School and pass the State of Florida Police Certification Test.
5. Required to sign a 3-year employment commitment with the Belleview Police Department, which will begin on the date the Police Officer Recruit is successfully released following the BPD Field Training Program.

SERVICE:
High volume of service is provided in assist­ing the public and employees in person and by tele­phone; must communicate clearly to assist others.

FUNCTION AND ACTIVITIES FOR ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
Temporary modifications to provide reasonable accommodations do not waive any essential functions of the job requirements.

Manual dexterity to operate a police patrol car in a safe manner during both emergency and non-emergency situations. Manual dexterity to operate a police radio, sirens and lights while driving at a high rate of speed. Operates a patrol vehicle safely under adverse weather conditions. Walks, stands, and sits for extend­ed periods of time while performing investigations. Flexibility to move, bend, stoop, and reach to physi­cally restrain resisting defendants, collect evidence, move in and out of a patrol car, direct traffic and operate a computer. Ability to push, pull, stoop, kneel, bend and reach, lift and carry approximately 50 pounds of evidence and recovered property from one location to another. Reads reports, policies and proce­dures. Visually and audibly detects criminal activity and monitor safety concerns at all times for personal and public safety concerns. Manual dexterity to write a high volume of reports, tickets and investigative notes while standing out of doors, sitting inside a police vehicle, and under other such conditions. Manual dex­terity to properly use a baton, fire a weapon, defend oneself, effect a proper arrest which includes physi­cally applying handcuffs and using a firearm.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1. This position works a varied 24/7 schedule.
2. This position is an essential employee and is required to report for work for any declared emergency or major disaster.

1. Approximately 50% of these job functions are performed while riding in a patrol vehicle or patrol car. The remaining time is spent in investigating calls for service at various locations both indoors and outdoors. At times reports and investigations are complet­ed at the Police Department or the County jail.
2. The job functions are performed on a rotating shift schedule. Officers are assigned to a scheduled shift for a 16-week duration.
3. Equipment used consists of a patrol car, hand­cuffs, police baton, police portable radio, mobile radio, lights and sirens, spotlight, flashlight, service weapon, fire extinguisher, computer, and copi­er.
4. Immediate supervisor is at the job site 65% of the time and is also available by police radio and tele­phone.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to absorb and remember facts and information.

11. Ability to testify in court in a professional manner.
12. Ability to learn laws, city ordinances methods, and procedures in applying them effectively.
13. Ability to learn geographical layout of city.
14. Ability to endure sustained amounts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty in unfavorable situations.
15. Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma or G.E.D.
2. Must pass the LEO background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological and physical evaluation.
3. Must be 19 years of age by the time of graduation from the Law Enforcement Academy.
4. Florida Operators Drivers License
5. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) examination for State Law Enforcement Officer
Certification must be taken and passed within 30 days of successful graduation from Basic Police Recruit School.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:
Resident of Marion County; must have a telephone.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
Ballistics vest, traffic vest, flashlight, rubber gloves, and face mask.

CITY VEHICLE:

Assigned during working hours as required. May be assigned city vehicle full time, based upon meeting eligibility requirements detailed in the PGOs and/or current duty

assignment (i.e.: K-9 officer, CID, etc.).
