Job SummaryThe Manager of Police Academys responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating LITs basic peace officer training course, assisting the Academys Director in managing the departments daily operations and training activities, and teaching courses, as assigned. This is an exempt level position.Duties/Responsibilities
  • Participate in the recruitment of students for the program, the department, and LIT
  • Teach, counsel, and tutor students
  • Actively engage students in the learning process through coordination and instruction of police skills topics
  • Maintain computer-based records
  • Process applicants and administer entrance exams for the police academy
  • Assist with ensuring program compliance with TCOLE standards
  • Prepare lesson plans, presentations, reports, and evaluations
  • Assist with in-service training programs, as needed
  • Represent the police academy at LIT functions and professional groups
  • Maintain office hours
  • Help coordinate and attend advisory committee meetings
  • Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to upgrade knowledge and skills
  • Assist with the management and maintenance of classrooms and equipment
  • Maintain awareness of national issues and trends in education and law enforcement and adapt accordingly for the Police Academy environment
  • Perform tasks in an ethical and professional manner and in accordance with TSUS and LIT policies and procedures
  • Hours vary depending on need and course schedule
  • Perform other related duties, as needed
  • Minimum/Preferred Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent; or professional licensure with demonstrated competencies
  • 5 years progressive work experience within criminal justice organization(s)
  • Intermediate TCOLE Peace Officer License
  • Must be eligible to hold a Peace Officer Commission issued by Lamar University Police Department.
  • Basic Instructor Certification (TCOLE or equivalent)
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office applications
  • Preferred Qualifications: Certification (or ability to be certified) in Taser Instructor, PPCT Instructor, Glock Armorer, Firearms Instructor, NAPDSupplemental Information Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine; frequently work in outdoor weather conditions; and frequently move items and equipment typically found in a law enforcement environment, up to 50 lbs.
