Police Cadet

The Police Cadet is a position that requires the employee to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.) as a prospective employee of the Police Department. Cadets will have to go through rigorous and extensive background investigations and then be required to complete the assigned B.L.E.T. program successfully. The employee may be required to perform additional tasks while not attending B.L.E.T. This is a non-exempt position with no benefits. The pay rate will be $15.53 dollars an hour until successful completion of B.L.E.T. at this point, the Cadet will be sworn in as a police officer and raised to the entry-level salary for officers, with full-time benefits. These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the Town .

  • Attends and successfully completes Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.); obtains a probationary law enforcement certificate.
  • Participate in educational training and successfully pass the B.L.E.T. tests, No deficiencies.
  • Participates in physical training and shows steady physical improvement. Successfully pass the Police Officers Physical Ability Test (POPAT).
  • Gains knowledge in the investigation of crimes and accidents.
  • Gains knowledge in preparing incident, accident, and arrest reports.
  • Gains knowledge in processing crime scenes.
  • Gains knowledge on the preparation of accurate incident, accident, and arrest reports.
  • Gains knowledge in developing skills needed to prepare cases and testify in District and Superior Courts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Must be meet all minimum qualifications as follows : 1. Minimum Qualifications :
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development Test indicating high school equivalency.
  • Be of good moral character as defined by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division.
2. Disqualifiers:
  • Failure to be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission (12NCAC 9B.101/9B.0111)
  • Any felony conviction
  • A crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than two years; or
  • A crime or unlawful act defined as a Class B misdemeanor within the five-year period prior to the date of application for employment; or
  • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class B misdemeanors regardless of the date of conviction; or
  • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class A misdemeanors except the applicant may be employed if the last conviction occurred more than two years prior to the date of application for employment.
  • Untruthfulness or the falsification of any application, certificate, credential, interview, test, or document associated with the application process.
  • Dishonorable Discharge from any military service
  • Current unsatisfactory credit history ratings
  • Known unsatisfied judgements at time of application.
  • Any arrears in child support or failure to pay child support.
  • Deliberate use of any Schedule I narcotic
  • Deliberate use of any Schedule II narcotic within 60 months of application
  • Deliberate use of any Schedule III-V non-prescribed narcotic within 36 months of application
  • Deliberate use of any Schedule VI narcotic within 12 months of application
  • Behavior unsuitable or inappropriate for an Officer as determined by the Chief of Police and/or Designee.
  • Unstable job history as determined by the Chief of Police and/or Designee.
Licenses and Professional Certifications
  • NC Drivers License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Basic knowledge of law enforcement vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology. Basic knowledge of criminal investigation tools and techniques. Basic knowledge of department policies and procedures. Be able to successfully pass a POPAT physical test. Ability to represent the Town in a professional and respectful manner while interacting with a diverse set of individuals within the workplace and the community. ICS/NIMS course minimums required for all employees include FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800. Additionally, employees assigned middle and upper-level responsibilities within incident operations may also be required to complete additional follow-on courses deemed as necessary by Emergency Management and Human Resources staff. Working Conditions

Employee is subject to inside environmental conditions having the lighting, temperature, and noise of an open floor-plan office environment. The employee is also exposed to outdoor conditions and may be frequently exposed to weather elements including rain, wind, varying temperatures, etc. In addition, the employee must effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to weapons, hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high workplaces, dangerous animals and/or individuals, extremely loud noises. Employees are also exposed to long conditions of sitting in an educational environment.

Physical Requirements

A portion of work is performed within an office environment, primarily behind a desk, and frequently includes the operation of a computer. The employee must read and write, and interact with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. Work also requires running, walking, standing, bending, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, and/or moving equipment, pushing, and pulling various objects, climbing stairs and ladders, and operating assigned equipment including motor vehicles. Must be able to perform medium work exerting a large amount of force; and/or moderate force frequently. Must be able to successfully pass the required POPAT physical assessment test, along with required physical assessment training during the B.L.E.T. term.
