Description
St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, operating within the Department of Judicial Administration, provides a variety of courtroom related services. Currently, we are seeking dependable, self-motivated individuals to work within Bailiff and Civil process positions.
The role of Bailiff maintains peace, order, and security within the courtroom. Starting salary is $18.07 hourly.
The role of Civil Process is responsible to process and serve legal documents within assigned geographic areas. Starting salary is $18.07 hourly.

Maintains security by inspecting and securing the courtroom, surrounding hallways and doors, and the judge's chamber before and after court sessions.
Maintains order by observing courtroom proceedings to prevent unnecessary disruptions and taking custody of individuals as instructed by the judge.
Provides assistance to the jury panel by giving instructions, answering general questions, ensuring no contact occurs with unauthorized materials or persons, and escorting to and from the jury deliberation room.
Provides assistance to the judge and courtroom personnel by reviewing courtroom documents for completion, serving legal papers, and by filing, retrieving, and faxing documents.
Responds to medical emergencies as appropriate.
Successfully completes in-service trainings.
Exercises appropriate judgement in use of personal protection items.
Carries personal protection items in approved manner.
Performs additional duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF CIVIL PROCESS DUTIES:
Receives, processes, and documents proper service of legal papers as prescribed by law, using a personal vehicle, to residents and businesses.
Performs administrative duties in the office regarding civil process and execution.
Serves as bailiff on an as-needed basis to maintain order and to ensure the courts run smoothly.
Successfully completes in-service trainings.
Exercises appropriate judgement in use of personal protection items.
Carries personal protection items in approved manner.
Performs additional duties as required.
BAILIFF
Equivalent to one year of professional work experience in execution of civil and criminal process (law enforcement, investigations, corrections, enforcement positions, or Deputy Sheriff positions).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (BAILIFF):
Current CPR (Adult and Child) and AED certification is required within 90 days of employment
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Must maintain qualifying standards in both the handgun and TASER within 6 months of hire
Must possess and maintain a department-approved personal handgun in good working condition for work shifts within 30 days of employment
May be required to possess and maintain a department-approved personal TASER in good working condition for work shifts
CIVIL PROCESS
Equivalent to one year of professional work experience in execution of civil or criminal processes (law enforcement, investigations, corrections, enforcement positions, or Deputy Sheriff positions).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (CIVIL PROCESS):
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Use of a personal vehicle is required; mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with federal guidelines
Must maintain qualifying standards in both the handgun and TASER within 6 months of hire
Must possess and maintain a department-approved personal handgun in good working condition for work shifts within 30 days of start date
May be required to possess and maintain a department-approved personal TASER in good working condition for work shifts
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated, and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
