Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to supervise and monitor the daily operations of infectious disease case investigation activities in support of the mission to identify cases and monitor trends of infectious diseases in Maryland. This position will monitor all reportable disease investigations (not including HIV and STIs), collaborate with and provide guidance to local health departments regarding the control of infectious diseases, supervise epidemiologists in the division to ensure quality of work and lead the reconciliation process between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). This position will support the mission of the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration which is to protect, promote and improve the health and well-being of all Marylanders by decreasing the morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases. This position reports to the Chief, Division of Infectious Disease Surveillance.\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. \nExperience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work. \nNotes: \n1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience. \n2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience. \n3. Candidates may substitute the possession of Master's degree from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience. \n4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. \n

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must possess two years of experience preventing or controlling communicable diseases in a local, state or federal public health agency.\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:\n\n\n1. Experience supervising staff in a public health setting.\n\n\n2. Experience conducting epidemiologic studies and investigations of communicable disease cases.\n

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\n
