Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

A Corrections Officer II is responsible for assisting with the public safety by exercising safe and effective containment and supervision of offenders, by managing offenders in the community, and by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens. This position is full performance corrections work involving control and supervision of adult male felons in a correctional facility. Duties involve enforcement of rules and regulations' controlling offenders in living, work or recreational areas; ensuring safety and security of staff offenders, and the public; and serving as the officer-in-charge.

  • Valid Kansas Driver's License

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for COI A
  • Have a minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders
  • Have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant college coursework or completion of correction officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all or the required COTP.
  • COII Positions are subject to promotional score sheet. In order to receive points for education and training, transcripts and outside training certificates (must be at least 36 clock hours and relevant to corrections) must be provided by application deadline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situation and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new or promoted employees.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Upon offer of employment, the selected candidate must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance within 10 days of the job offer. The certificate can be obtained by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days. If an individual who has been offered employment cannot provide proof of a tax clearance certificate, the individual will be required to enter into a payment plan with KDOR and remain current on such payment plan or make other arrangements with KDOR to achieve the tax clearance required under Executive Order 2004-03.
