Summary:
The City of North Chicago Fire and Police Board of Commissioners is seeking motivated and experienced police officers who share our vision and are willing to carry our mission forward.

Mission:
The mission of the North Chicago Police Department is to consistently provide for the security and safety of those in the City through the management and execution of various public safety operational strategies. We do this by reducing crime, ensuring the safety of our citizens and building trusting partnerships through the professional and ethical enforcement of the law.

Our vision is to develop collaborative partnerships based on trust and transparency with the residents of the City of North Chicago and leveraging that partnership to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life for our residents as well as those traveling and conducting business in our City.
Duties:
This position is responsible for the performance of duties and tasks involving the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work may involve assignment to uniformed patrol, investigation, school resource duty, traffic enforcement, or other specialized department activity.
Responds to and interacts with the general public, residents, elected / public officials, supervisory personnel, employees, and/or others within and outside of the organization in a courteous, professional and effective manner.
Under supervision, the incumbent performs standard and routine work assignments, within established policies and procedures, independently to conclusion; unusual problems which may require exceptions are referred to the supervisor; receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments.
Some work is performed in an office environment. However, most work is performed in an outdoor environment that requires the incumbent to work in: all weather conditions; poor lighting; a variety of terrains; varying noise levels; and will be required to sit, climb, drive, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, walk, run, stand, push, pull, lift, hear / listen, and see / observe. Uses personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous situations.
Work scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime call outs before and after standard scheduled hours of work. Transitioning to a 12 hour shift in January 2023 which will afford officers every other weekend off.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates for lateral appointment to the position of police officer must meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time of application:
State of Illinois certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board with no more than forty (40) hours of training required by that Board for recertification, if necessary. (Part-time certification as a law enforcement officer does not meet this requirement.)
United States citizen
Education - High school education or equivalent
Valid Driver's License
Be able to pass a background, polygraph, psychological and medical test
Residency Requirement:
35 air miles from North Chicago IL, Wisconsin residents ARE allowed
